Key Statistics
- Uganda is a country in East Africa. It is bordered by the countries of Sudan, Kenya, Congo, Rwanda, and Tanzania, and is about the same size as the states of Michigan and Oregon.
- Lake Victoria, on the southern border, is the African continent's largest lake and the second largest fresh-water body in the world.
- Uganda is home to approximately 30 million people. Half of the population is under 15 years of age, and the average life expectancy is under 50 years.
- The majority of the people, representing more than 40 ethnic groups, live in rural areas.
- About 80% of the working population is involved in agriculture.
- The capital of Uganda is Kampala, by far the largest city in the country. More than 1.5 million
people live in Kampala; however,
the city swells to more than double that size each day as people stream in to work or seek jobs. The unemployment rate hovers around 50%.
- Since 1987, the government has been stable, leading to economic growth. Uganda's gross domestic product (GDP) expanded at a 6% annual rate during the past 10 years.
- English is the official language of the country; however, many tribal languages are spoken.
